Beginner Makiwara

At Modern Hojo Undo we're big fans of the makiwara. The makiwara is the most foundational and most important piece of supplemental training a karate practitioner can do. Unfortunately, it can be harsh, uncomfortable, and, if done incorrectly, damaging. For this reason some people choose to avoid it, and children are usually banned completely.

That is a shame because the main purpose of the makiwara is to perfect technique, not build calluses. The beginner makiwara is my attempt to solve that problem and lower the bar for makiwara training. It's still a makiwara, but the resistance comes from metal springs in the base instead of the post itself. This gives it just enough spring not to bounce, but still light enough for anyone.

The beginner makiwara is ideal for children before their bones have fully hardened, adults who are new to the makiwara and want a less painful start, and more advanced students looking to train pressure point strikes.

It comes fully assembled with a base that can be attached to either walls or floors. As standard it ships with a 4ft post, but it can be cut down to a shorter height for children. Leave a note when ordering and I can cut it to your prefered height, or you can do it yourself at any point with any saw.

I've made a short video of the beginner makiwara in action.

In the box:  (1) Beginner Makiwara, post, pad, and base included

                  installation instructions
