Kongoken
The kongoken was invented by by Goju Ryu founder Miyagi Chojun Sensei after a trip to Hawaii. The Hawaiian wrestlers used a steel circle weight in their training. Miyagi Sensei added straight sections to turn the circle into an oval. This allowed it to better approximate the size, shape, and weight distribution of a human being.
The kongoken is used to develop grabbing, twisting, and throwing strength. It can also be used in partner drills. You can think of it as a traditional grappling dummy. If you study Goju Ryu you need a kongoken. Your shieko-dachi will thank you. If you don’t study Goju Ryu you can still benefit from the kongoken. If you are looking for a way to develop greater power in your hips the kongoken will not only help you build it but will teach you how to transfer it more efficiently.
Grip diameter: 2” (51mm)
Height: 68” (1.73m)
Width: 26in (66cm)
Weight: 70lbs (32kg).
Materials: Steel tube filled with concrete
I recommend the 70lb (32kg) size for people who have mastered the 50lb (23kg) kongoken or, advanced lifters only. Kongokens are designed to help you learn how to move your opponent’s weight. As such they are more difficult to manage than their weight implies. If in doubt go for a smaller size. A kongoken that is too light will still help you progress to some degree, but a kongoken that is too heavy is all but unusable.
